If we are investing public money to improve transportation, then we can't just rely on company talking points and media hype about the "benefits" of automation. We all need to be much better informed about the future that this driverless vehicle tech will create.
Pittsburgh City Council members Theresa Kail-Smith, Corey O'Connor, and Deb Gross have called for a Post-Agenda Hearing for Council to learn more about the impacts of AV from experts in the field. PPT has worked with these Council-people to assemble a panel from across the country who will testify about their experience and answer questions about the holistic impacts of AV. Speakers will join us from:
• Shefali Rai, Union of Concerned Scientists' Science Network
• Transport Workers Union of America, Local 208, Columbus OH
• Special Faculty at CMU
• Eric Boerer, BikePGH
• Laura Wiens, Pittsburghers for Public Transit
This is a long-overdue public conversation for our City. In the last three years, 5 companies have started testing on our streets. Millions of tax-payer dollars have been earmarked to facilitate the deployment of self-driving shuttles. And the City Department of Mobility and Infrastructure is moving forward with "targeted outreach" about AV without first consulting with impacted communities.
Join us on Tuesday, July 23rd, at City Council Chambers to start the conversation about the real transportation future that we need to create.
2:30pm Press Conference Outside Council Chambers
3:00pm Post-Agenda Hearing on Autonomous Vehicle Impacts
Although there is no public comment at Post-Agenda Hearings, it is important that you join us to learn about AV and show that this is an important issue for PGH. Reach out if you need a ride: firstname.lastname@example.org
