WHAT IS THIS?
This is a Youth Climate Organizing Training by Sunrise Maine, a new, emerging local hub of the youth-led organization, Sunrise. Our mission is to build a movement of young people to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process. We're bringing full-time Sunrise Trainers from the national crew up to Maine to align members of our new hub with the Sunrise's DNA and organizing strategy as we launch our hub here in Maine.
WHY DO THIS?
The science is more than clear, and the solutions are here; we can no longer be silent while fossil fuel elites and their pet politicians ruin our chances for a safe and equitable future. With about a decade left to massively transform our society to avoid climate catastrophe, we need the public and the people who represent us to understand the climate crisis as the emergency it is, and the Green New Deal as the only response bold enough to meet the demands of science and justice. We need to bring the biggest youth-led intervention on climate change in U.S. history here to Maine and transform politics to work for all of us. Our hub is just emerging here, and we need all hands on deck as we look forward to 2020 and beyond.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
It's for you - our hub is just beginning, and we expect most people here to have very little experience, perhaps even no experience, with Sunrise so far! Whether you're just starting out and want to get involved in the hub or just want to learn more about climate justice, you've come to Sunrise events and meetings before and want to get the big picture of the Sunrise vision, or you're involved with other climate organizations or other organizing groups and want to hone your skills/build your network, we need you here!
This training is open to young people of any background, and welcomes people new to Sunrise and activism in general. Come join in the fight for a safe, healthy, and just future. Food and refreshments included!
Where: Zero Station, 222 Anderson St., Portland, ME 04101
Date: Saturday July 20 - Sunday July 21
